Artemis PFN Hip Fracture Nailing System

An intramedullary nailing platform for intertrochanteric and subtrochanteric fractures, combining a titanium nail with carbon-fibre-reinforced PEEK.

Overview

Artemis PFN is an intramedullary nailing platform for the fixation of stable and unstable intertrochanteric and subtrochanteric fractures of the proximal femur.

Its titanium alloy nail is partially over-molded with injection-molded carbon-fibre-reinforced PEEK — a combination designed to support load-sharing consistent with fracture fixation principles.

Key features

  • Titanium alloy nail, partially over-molded with CF-PEEK
  • For stable and unstable intertrochanteric and subtrochanteric fractures
  • Lag screw with optional anti-rotation locking pin
  • One-piece cannulated set screw that limits rotation within the construct

Our contribution

Design and development of the entire system — implants and instrument set — from the first concept to the first implantation, including the 510(k) submission. We managed the verification and validation effort and created all supporting documents for a smooth registration.

The key novelty of this device is a new, resource-friendly manufacturing technology that uses less material. The result is a high-tech product that can be produced at reduced cost — a key feature given the epidemic number of hip fractures. The nail reaches the same median fatigue limit as the market leader while sharing more of the load with the bone.
